Summary of 2018-2019 Academic Year

It was a busy academic year, and YouCount! was involved in various engagements. Read about them!

K-12 Space:

“The Shark Tank: create and defend your business ideas”

This course introduces students to basic financial literacy concepts such as budgeting, savings, investment, interest, risk, and return. While students simulate the popular TV show “Shark Tank”, they improve their financial literacy and financial awareness through interactive learning, teamwork, and collaboration. Students generate ideas for a business, construct a mock business plan, and even create a marketing strategy to pitch to the “investors”, present their ideas to business owners from the community after 6 classes. This program was offered in two locations:

· SOAR, an after-school enrichment program in Salisbury, CT. Twelve 5th and 6th grade students enrolled in this series of classes in the fall of 2018. Read the testimonials of the students’ parents and the coverage in the local newspaper!

· “Minds in Motion- Litchfield 2019”, the signature enrichment event of the Connecticut Association for the Gifted, offering exciting, fast-paced, interactive workshops for every student. YouCount! collaborated with the Litchfield Educational Foundation to present an abbreviated version of “Shark Tank” through four hours of interactive business plan development on April 6th, 2019.

During this workshop at Salisbury Central School in December, 2018, 5th graders read the book, practiced and discussed savings through math exercises, and learned about the various vehicles for saving.
